Chapter 5 Summary and Relation to my future career!

Chapter five talks about the tools you can use online to either organize web-pages you have been too and like to use. This would be known as bookmarking or tagging. With web-pages to help like www.delicious.com which does not seem to be a web-page for this anymore would allow you to
"bookmark and tagging websites" (The Connected Educator pg 75). It also explains tools for connecting and collaborating with others. Some of the more popular sites that are mentioned are Twitter, google docs, and wikis which we all use a lot for research but all teachers despise. It also mentions Podcast which in today's day and age we use Spotify for this or Youtube.

Also, if I was to relate this to my future career it would be to connect with my patients. I would use things like twitter specifically for business and I also think it would be neat to have a podcast where I can talk about patients' problems, with or without their name depending on if I get permission, about what their problem was and the cause of it. I would then go into how to either help fix the problem or make sure the problem does not happen to you. My Orthodontist uses his phone to play Spotify music for background sound and to relax his patients. Make them feel at home and I would probably do the same thing. Also, because it helps me focus and stay relaxed. Would it be weird to contact your Orthodontist through twitter to make appointments or ask questions? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Hi Stephen,
I don't think it would be weird at all to be able to contact your orthodontist through twitter! I actually think this is such a great idea. I think twitter is a great resource to use in the professional field. There are so many people who use twitter that it would be super easy to respond to patients with questions and make appointments. I am pursuing a career in teaching so I also could benefit from using twitter in my professional career as well!

  2. Hi Stephen,
I am also hoping to connect with patients in my future career (physical therapy) and I really like your podcast idea. It will definitely be a creative idea and I think would be worth trying out for sure. I was planning on using Twitter as a helpful online tool for myself so I actually think it would be a good idea for you to use this platform.

  4. Stephen,
While I personally wouldn't use twitter to schedule orthodontist appointments, I do think it would be a cool way to get in touch and ask smaller questions. That being said, I believe work-life balance is a hugely important thing. I feel like having a Twitter account can be a tricky path to losing that balance. My advice would be to have set time for Twitter time like an "Ask an Orthodontist Anything" hour a few days a week so that your job doesn't take over your entire life. Overall though, I think it's a neat way to engage with patients outside of the time they spend in your office.

  5. Stephen, your question did make me laugh although it also made me think. Yes, I do think in our current day in age it might be weird to contact your orthodontists for an appointment via twitter. However, we may laugh in 50 years at the idea of NOT contacting your orthodontist via twitter. Methods of communication and the internet are always changing and I would not be surprised to see the platforms we use for fun make their way into a more professional and functional light.

  6. Stephen, I really enjoyed reading your blog post. I think that Twitter is a great way to connect with patients. I think it would be cool to use Twitter to schedule appointments. I think that it would be a good way to connect with patients, especially since social media is becoming a part of everyday life. Most people check Twitter more than their voicemails nowadays!

  7. I think Twitter would be a really quick and easy way for patients to connect with you in a more casual way and for you to be able to reply to their concerns. You could also use Twitter to answer questions that people ask and for it to be posted on your page for others to learn from. It's a great way to get information out there. Social media is something that mostly everyone is using and it would be a convenient way for communication.

  8. I would personally say that contacting your orthodontist over Twitter to schedule an appointment would be odd at best, though contacting them that way for public correspondence such as general questions would be good if they have outlets for that. As for your suggestion to talk about patients' issues on podcast, I would highly recommend never giving away patient names as this could lead to a good deal of trouble and it should be unnecessary in order to convey the point anyway.

  9. I think your idea of having a podcast to answer questions or highlight concerns of patients is such a good idea! There are so many people that don't like to ask for help so being able to turn to one source for help would be great. I also think that using Twitter to make appointments would be a little odd and may isolate people that don't have social media like Twitter.
