Chapter 4 Summary + Relation to future career

Chapter four's title is "Building a Collaborative Culture" and in this chapter, it talks about trust and building relationships. While reading I kept thinking of teachers as the topic and helped me understand it as I was going through it. It starts off saying that you should put relationships first and as I stated I put teachers as the topic and when I thought about it if you have a class where the teacher does not just read off slides but actually tries to engage students and make it fun, majority of students will end up doing better because of the better relationship they have with the teacher compared to a teacher that just reads slides and hands out worksheets. Next, the chapter talks about is trust. Continuing with the trend of teachers, if they can build trust between students there will be more who ask for help, more who open up about their problems and overall can have the teacher do as much as they can to help. Most teachers will want their students to succeed, many do it just so they don't get fired. Students can really feel when the teacher cares and is trying to be a good teacher. My best class I ever had was a teacher that was both building great relationships with the whole class and a very trustworthy teacher.
Now, if I was to relate this to my future career of being an Orthodontist I would definitely try to do both of these. I want to build a great relationship with my patients and even my co-workers. Having a good relationship will lead to your name being spread around and having a happier patient. I have had Doctors that I did not like and they clearly did not try to build a better relationship and therefore we stopped going to them and their name was spread about negatively. Also. building trust with your patients and co-workers. If you have someone's trust they will speak up more and feel more comfortable around you. Trust and relationship to me coincide with one another since if you build a good relationship you begin to gain their trust and vice versa.

  1. Hi Stephen,
Your definitely right about doctors and relationships between them. I've had experience where some were just straight up rude and made me uncomfortable to even come back. Then theres some that are like friends to your entire family and actually make a conversation with you while helping you. It's great that you want to change that and put it towards your future.

  2. Hi there Steven! I love that you mentioned that you instantly thought of teaching when reading this chapter. That is actually my future career and I really read this chapter thoroughly because I felt that I could for sure use it in my career. I never thought about trust and relationship coinciding until I read your last paragraph! That is a great way to put it! This blog was an eye-opener for me!

  3. Hey Stephen,
I really liked your blog post! I agree that this chapter is about building trust and relationships. I liked how you related it to teaching. I liked your example that a teacher who engages the class will basically have a better relationship with the students rather than a teacher who just reads off the slides. I agree with this so much! You did a really good job also relating this to yourself and your future job as an Orthodontist!

  4. I agree with both points that you brought up. Classes are more enjoyable when the teacher actually cares and makes an effort with students which ultimately builds that relationship with the students, making them do better in the class and actually enjoy going to that class unlike if you had to go to a class where the teacher does not care and does not build that relationship. Additionally, the point about not liking doctors because they never built that relationship is something that I have done. I did not like the doctor and that lead to finding a new doctor because I felt they were not doing the best job since it came across like they did not want to be there.

  5. Hi Stephen. With your second paragraph you explain the benefits of good communication as an orthodontist, being happier patients and your name getting around. I agree that in any career, good communication is a key factor in building a good reputation, but especially in your case as an orthodontist, seeing as building your reputation is the only way to get more patients in and out of your office. Whereas reputation with my career in coding is only really prevalent in the upper echelon of work, it's absolutely vital for you to grow as an orthodontist.
